?!

Tue Feb 28, 2006, 7:05 AM
Um - is it just me, or is it not possible to perpetrate fanart in other other way than through drawings?! It's only when you click "Traditional Art" and then "Drawings" that you get to the category of "Fanart". Huh?!

I have so far been posting all my stuff that is done with felt tips + paint under "Mixed Media" - now apparently you can't have Mixed Media Fanart. I never add disclaimers to my descriptions, so suddenly in the grip of copyright panic I moved all my stuff to "Drawings" (well, they are drawings) and "Fanart". Still, you know, I don't think it makes much sense. I know people here who bake Potter COOKIES and fashion the loveliest Potter DOLLS. Tsk tsk. deviantART does put limits to our creativity, or attempts to do so ;).

Don't forget the kiriban, those of you who are interested...

Looking forward to seeing what blue has asked you to do. Next time, blue, it's going to be a stalking competition. ;)

Blue's request is giving me headaches! :D So if next time you should win the kiriban, please don't ask for an animal to be included...

I meant to reply - I have a big encyclopedia of cats with lots of good photos of different breeds and of cats in different positions. I used to use it to draw from. Are you looking for a photo reference of particular postures for cats? I could scan a load and e-mail them to you if that would help. I used to have a cat too but he died *sob*. Good luck with drawing. The one in the pic of Snape and Brynhild looked nice.

Thank you very much for the offer, but it won't be necessary... I bought a cat encyclopedia just to learn and draw cats! :D I had it on my shelf for a year now, but I haven't seriously attempted drawing cats until Blue asked me to.

Same here: I had a lovely cat, but it got hit by a car; it was terrible. Since then I'm too scared of losing another dear pet, so now I keep orchids that don't leave their pots.

I find that even with photo reference the cats I draw just miss something. I don't know - they never look the way I want them to, particularly their mouths. :(

Actually, I have the same problem with drawing people from photos - you know the way that I always have to use a reference. They just come out wooden. I think it is because when I draw from life there are imperceptible rotational movements as I look up, which translates into that 3-D look. Well, recently I have found that if I use two similar photos or images that are ALMOST the same but not quite, from slightly different angles, it is closer to having a live model in front of me. I was drawing my Dad this morning, so I mostly used one photo, but found another from almost the same, but slightly a different angle. It really helped, even though the photos were taken about 15 years apart. Maybe that will help with your cat drawing? If you can just find two pictures that have similar but not quite the same angles - 3-D reference! And cat's mouths are SO small yet can say so much - it's going to be a real pain to get it right - like the browlines and mouths on humans.

Anyway, I can't draw animals, so you're going to do better than I could. Sux to blue! (not really)

I know what you mean. All my animations are Digital - Vector - People. It is their problem and not mine if they are gonna be this short-sighted. :)
