Description

Galadriel wearing Nenya. (J.R.R. Tolkien)

This was actually supposed to be a warm-up sketch, but it got out of hand because I really liked how it came out :). I'm trying do do regular excercises with watercolour in the hopes of gaining greater confidence with the medium. The excercise this time around was to attempt to create more contrast in my painting. Somewhere along the way I seem to have become frightened of darker paint, so I tried to remedy that here.

Media used: Faber-Castell brush pens (Cinnamon 189, Raw Umber 180, Caput Mortuum 169, Cold grey III 232); Blockx, Winsor & Newton and Cotman watercolours. Painted in a watercolour Moleskine 8 1/4 x 5", 200 g/m².

I really, really love this. I'm still not through with the Silmarillion, but have come far enough to have now much more understanding of the history of elves in general, and of Galadriel in particular (as well as Elrond, which adds another level of appreciation to your Elrond art, too). Apart from being breathtakingly beautiful and fitting the Tolkien description so well in so many ways (some you are probably not even aware of, since to my knowledge you haven't read the Silmarillion, have you?), she is now firmly planted as my personal one and only head-canon Galadriel. I like movie-Galadriel, Blanchett does an awesome interpretation of the character, and I have seen many non-movie Galadriel fanarts, but none answers so well to everything I had in my mind about her. The Noldor princess having seen the light of the trees, the radiant one, the one crowned in glory (as the meanings of her names state), but also the ruler of Lothlórien with a very special connection to nature in general and the trees in particular.
The flesh tones of her skin showing the light of the trees which makes her so different from most other elves in middle-earth, the way her hair interweaves with the branches and symbolises that conneciton, the introspective bearing suggesting a mental communication with her ring of power, or someone else, and all those wonderful details: these adorable, perfect lips of a perfect mouth, the beautiful, seemingly organic circlet which seems to be an extension of the tree growing around her head, the design of Nenya, and her blond! eyebrows ♥ as well as the shades of blond of her hair everywhere. It looks so rich and vibrant as if it were alive and interacting with the tree of its own volition. Ah, and the tree, the foliage - just the perfect colour scheme in my opinion, forming a most suitable background for her. Oh, and her ear is the most perfect elven ear imaginable.

I also think you don't have to be afraid of darker paint at all! It works well already, and in my humble opinion could easily have been more intensely used here on the foliage.
